I - am - a leatherman. Its who I am, but its not all that I am.
Labels like "leatherman" are often used as shortcuts to decide who to associate with and who to value. Old guard/new guard, player/non-player, all the kinks and fetishes there are plenty of labels that define and divide us. Gender, sexuality, age, race, beauty, wealth, status, politics, and health add layers of labels creating niches that can be comfortable -- or confining -- or both.
The things we surround ourselves with and the things we wear can hide or announce who we really are. True, our ability to accessorize may be all that separates us from the animals -- but, it can also separate us from each other.
Just look around. See the labels
see the differences. Still, were all here now together, because were more alike than different. In that lies the promise that our diverse community can build on the accomplishments of our past to press forward as a cohesive, credible force.
In harness and chaps, or suit and tie, or bare ass naked -- where it counts the most I am a leatherman, different and proud.
